Honeysuckle Class ( Year 3/4 )

It was not the thorn breaking the Honeysuckle it was the Honeysuckle embracing the thorn.

Welcome to Honeysuckle Class, home of Year 3/4. This year, our class teacher is Miss Pearson and working with her is Mrs Rowe and Mrs Thorpe. Here you'll find all the information you need to help your child progress, supporting the learning that goes on in class and also giving you a window into what they are doing through the year.

Meet the Teacher

English

We are often asked whether there are any books which we can recommend for pupils. The website: https://schoolreadinglist.co.uk shows lots of good choices for individual year groups. Each half-term, we teach English through a text-led approach, using a quality story to spark children's imagination. Our first text of the year is 'The Iron Man' by Ted Hughes, which links in with our 'Iron Giants' theme.

Grammar and Reading Comprehension

Alongside our English lessons, grammar and reading comprehension are taught through structured weekly and daily lessons in year 3/4.

Once a week, we conduct weekly grammar lessons that align with curriculum standards for both years 3 and 4. These lessons focus on teaching vital grammatical principles and structures; which are reinforced though engaging activities and exercises.

Each day, during reading comprehension lessons, pupils read a selected passage and answer related questions. These lessons are designed to enhance students' understanding of texts. This practice helps to develop their critical thinking skills, vocabulary, and ability to interpret and analyse information.

Maths

As a school, we follow the White Rose Maths schemes of learning; please find the overview for the year here, it will help you support your child in knowing what concepts are taught throughout the year.

The Multiplication Tables Check (MTC)

The multiplication tables check is statutory for all year 4 pupils registered at state-funded maintained schools, alternative provision schools or academies, including free schools, in England.

The purpose of the MTC is to determine whether pupils can recall their times tables fluently, which is essential for future success in mathematics. It helps schools to identify pupils who have not yet mastered their times tables, so that additional support can be provided.

MTC Preparation

To help prepare children for the MTC we practise our tables daily in school and set weekly homework sessions on TTrockstars. We ask children to complete a mix of garage and soundcheck sessions.

Garage sessions allow children to practice their times tables at their own pace. These sessions are tailored, by teachers, to their individual needs so they can work on areas where they need improvement.

Soundcheck sessions simulate the MTC helping to familiarise children with the format and timing of the test. It is also used to assess progress and identify areas that require further attention.

Here you'll find knowledge organisers, designed to help with vocabulary and concepts, related to our topics through the term.

what have we been doing?

Autumn 1

We have had a very busy half-term in Honeysuckle Class, and I am delighted to share some of the highlights with you.

In English we have read ‘Journey’ by Aaron Becker, a book with no words. We collaborated and used our imagination to bring this book alive by adding our own text.
We have explored place value in maths and learned how to round to the nearest 10, 100 and 1,000. As a class, we have loved using manipulatives to help support our learning. In science, we’ve been learning to group and classify living things cycles. We have enjoyed a series of practical lessons children in which we have played interactive games and worked collaboratively to group plants and animals.

Our exploration of maps in geography has captivated the children’s imaginations. We have studied a range of maps and atlases, including digital maps, and compared their features.

Autumn 2

Wow Honeysuckle Class! How are we half way through Autumn term already? How time flies when you’re having fun.

Here is an insight into what we have been up to this half term:

Inspired by the imagery of the poem ‘Summer Is Here’, we have worked extremely hard to create our own piece titled ‘Autumn Is Here’. We now early anticipate writing our very own independent poem ‘Christmas Is Coming’ as we begin to embrace the festive spirit. We have read and analysed ‘The Butterfly Lion’ by Michael Morpurgo in our reading comprehension lessons. Through engaging discussions, we have explored the journey of the protagonist, Bertie, and his deep connection with the white lion he rescues. In maths, we have actively explored the concepts of multiplication and division through a variety of engaging activities and hands on experiences. We have used arrays and number lines, to really help us to understand the relationship between these operations. In our recent scientific explorations, we have delved into the fascinating world of states of matter, examining the traditional classifications of solids, liquids and gases. However, our curiosity led us to investigate more complex and difficult-to-classify substances, such as Oobleck.

In our history lessons we are immersing ourselves in the fascinating world of the Shang Dynasty, one of China’s earliest and most influential civilisations. Through the study of archaeological findings, we are uncovering the rich culture, social culture and technological advancements that characterised this era.
